In this article, we will talk about design thinking, which is one of the creative thinking techniques known as design thinking. Design thinking addresses issues related to the design of thought. The method in question is a repeatable problem solving method. Since it has people at its center, it systematically examines the processes of human thought and offers a road map to reach a solution. It is used by many entrepreneurs and leaders around the world. The technique, which is generally used by startups today, was developed by Stanford University and consists of the following steps:

Creating and realizing a creative idea starts with understanding the customer and the problem. Empathy must be established to understand the problem.
After the problem is defined, a design is made with the idea and an implementation that will create an impact is started.
In this technique, the problem and solution are not considered at the same time. Focusing on the problem is the priority.
People should always be at the center of solutions.
Events should be viewed from a broad perspective,
At this stage, it would be appropriate to use the value proposition canvas.

In order to determine the value proposition, the customer profile must first be well defined. Customers with problems:

  • Age range
  • Financial status
  • living location
  • Complaints etc.

It is detected. The next step is the steps the customer takes when identifying his problem (customer jobs). The customer’s suffering due to this problem is listed. Afterwards, the customer’s expectations are determined. What the customer is afraid of, what he is enthusiastic about, what he is curious about should be determined.

In order to determine these issues, we cannot put ourselves in the customer’s shoes while listening to him, we need to listen to the customer by leaving out our own experience, it would be appropriate to revive the story in our memory while listening, we need to detect the emotion underlying what the customer says.

The first thing to do to determine the value proposition is to list what needs to be done to relieve the customer’s pain. At this stage, the medicine corresponding to each pain is determined.

In the next stage, it is determined which product or service can eliminate customer pain. At this stage, the product or service is determined.

What creates benefits for the customer in the product or service is listed. Finally, the value proposition is expressed in one sentence.

It is important that the resulting idea is attractive, earns money and/or reputation, and can be done. In the next stage, the use of lean canvas is important to focus on customer problem and solution validation.

It is produced from a lean canvas business model canvas and is very useful for individuals who want to establish a company at an early stage. Stages:

  1. With the definition of target customers and users, the characteristics of the customer segment that can be the first user are determined.
  2. The three most important problems of the target audience are determined and how these problems have been solved before is examined.
  3. In simple terms, there is a value proposition that explains what value our product or service offers and why it is different. For this reason, we mentioned the use of value proposition canvas above.
  4. For each problem, the solutions provided by our product or service are listed.
  5. Channels to reach customers are listed.
  6. How and where money will be earned and what the income model will be are determined.
  7. All expense items for the product or service are determined.
  8. Depending on the stage of the business idea, the metrics that need to be followed for success are determined.
  9. Features of the product or service that cannot be easily copied or purchased are listed.

The next stage is prototyping. Prototyping is done to identify defects and redesign the product and or service if necessary.

At this stage, the use of the 3P or TRIZ method will be useful. If the prototype is suitable, it is time for tests to carry out production or service.

The product or service that passes the tests specified by the customer or the relevant standards is ready for use.
